Album Review: Enormicon – Storm of Swords

Enormicon [USA]
Storm of Swords
2011
Full Length
Independent
Doom/Stoner Metal

The first few minutes of listening to these guys, my mind was searching for the right words to describe their music. Original? Enticing? They reminded me of bands such as Voivod, High On Fire, Tool, Soundgarden and Mastodon. These guys are really a breath of fresh air.

Enormicon is a three piece band and hails from Texas. These cowboys, formed in 2008 have laid out a warlike theme based on an original concept, Enormicon cleverly steers clear of political or social commentary, and relies instead on the brutal imagery and legends of a fantastic, primordial dimension known as “Gargantua”.

Clay Davis (vocals, guitars), Joe Rosenthal (bass), Dave Slaughter (drums) self produced this EP, “Storm of Swords” (EP) which is currently available on cdbaby.com and itunes.com.

The track, The Gargantuan is a fusion sonicscape of progressive, stoner metal shuffled into an angst ridden vocals that has the feel of the band jamming in a live setting.

Some may not take a listen to this type of bands but I somehow love the hybrid of their influences, better this than any of the unreadable band logos with cookie monster vocals in it. Though at times, I wish that they could mould that certain riff into a more memorable pattern. The band gel well together, where moments of Jazz and dissonant riffs clashes with each other fighting for a room, constantly paving a steady weight and groove, plus sample the lyric from the track ‘Fury Shall Know The Warmth Of Your Blood’:

What is this wicked calling? • Wind spirits’ baleful whine • Gale now whipping, howling What terror grips the spine? • A force hurls earth skyward • Fleshfed mill begins to grind

Sounds like a really serious contender for a HP Lovecraft novella.
